prevent cancer by either inhibiting estrogen action or by modulating hepatic metabolism. D-limonene, found in a variety of plants and concentrated in citrus peel oils, also inhibits carcinogen-induced rat mammary tumors by altering both phase I and phase II hepatic enzymes. There is an excellent chapter entitled "Regulation of Carcinogens and Mutagens in Foods in the United States." The current U.S. regulatory laws are inconsistent and confusing; furthermore, they are enforced by either the EPA or the FDA, depending upon the substance. This chapter summarizes the history of enactment and application of federal regulatory laws. Learning the historical context of governmental policy enables one to understand how dietary carcinogens are currently regulated. The book does not adequately cover the breadth of knowledge that is available about the relationship between nutrition and cancer. The topics discused are too detailed to be of interest to most practicing physicians; however, researchers who are interested in molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis and carcinogenesis will find many important advances in this volume. Unfortunately, much of the information is already dated, since the symposium was held in July of 1989. This book will serve as a reference for scientists in the field of mutagenesis/carcinogenesis.

Solid-state extraction of cortisol from plasma or serum for liquid chromatography.
Solid-state extraction of plasma or serum offers significant advantages over traditional liquid-liquid methods in cortisol determinations by liquid chromatography (HPLC). Sample preparation is facilitated and HPLC column contamination is minimized. Extract yield from the solid-state columns is enhanced by sample pretreatment with methanol. Cortisol values by solid-state extraction/HPLC correlat...
متن کاملQuantitative determination of three angiotensin-II-receptor antagonists in presence of Hydrochlorothiazide by RP-HPLC in their tablets preparations
Losartan potassium, Valsartan , Telmisartan and Irbesartan are angiotensin-II-receptor antagonists (ARA II) group which used in treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other drugs mainly Hydrochlorothiazide. RP- HPLC method was developed for the assay of three angiotensin-II-receptor antagonists (ARA-IIs) in presence of Hydrochlorothiazide. The method was performed by reversed ph...

متن کاملA HPLC-based chloramphenicol acetyltransferase assay for assessing hair growth: comparison of the sensitivity of UV and fluorescence detection.
In our attempt to measure hair growth by hair-specific markers, we used transgenic mice to express the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene under the control of an ultrahigh sulphur keratin gene promoter. To quantitate expression of the keratin gene, we required a chloramphenicol acetyltransferase assay which could measure enzyme activity in a single follicle and also could be used to assay a...
